Sara, idąc korytarzem, wyglądała przez okno na końcówkę listopada. Zastanawiała się, jak zimno będzie, gdy na błonia zawita zima i okryje wszystko zamarzniętą wodą. Nie zazdrościła Cosmo, który zawsze na lochy w domu narzekał po kilkaset razy. Sara wiedziała, że jej brat nie znosił niskich temperatur, a przyszło mu mieszkać właśnie w lochach.
Okryta smoczym łajnem, ulubionym nawozem profesor Sprout, zmierzała spokojnym krokiem do łazienki. Był cichy, ponury i spokojny dzień, ostatnia środa listopada. Za tydzień, dokładnie, zaczynał się grudzień… Szybko zleciało i bez większych problemów. Aczkolwiek, miesiąc po pojawieniu się najstraszliwszego mordercy w okolicach szkoły uczniowie wciąż rozprawiali o tym z przejęciem, a Sara i jej koleżanki z dormitorium zbiorowo cierpiały na bezsenność i lęk przed ciemnością.
– Chociaż, powinnyśmy raczej pamiętać, że to nie jest możliwe. – Melisa postarała się poprawić pasek od torby jedynym nieubabranym palcem. – On chyba nie wszedłby do nas? Hasło, no i to sypialnia dziewczyn!
– Ale możliwość jest zawsze! – rzekła Sara, kręcąc głową przecząco.
– No dobrze, ale są cztery domy i po czternaście sypialń w każdym. To musiałybyśmy mieć szczególnego pecha, żeby wlazł akurat do nas!
– Jestem za tym, żeby spać z chłopakami! – rzekła, udając drżenie, Romilda Vane.
Dziewczynki weszły gęsiego do łazienki na drugim piętrze, tej nieużywanej i podeszły do umywalek. Sara puściła mimo uszu to, co powiedziała Romilda. Nie lubiła tej dziewczynki z tego względu, że pogardzała jej wystrajaniem się i mizdrzeniem do kolegów z klasy. Czuła, że jedenaście lat to za wcześnie na takie dziwne gierki i tematy do rozmów.
– Znowu ktoś przeszkadza mi umrzeć?! Co za los, nawet po śmierci! – lamentował gdzieś przy kabinach duch uczennicy Hogwartu. Dziewczynki nie przejęły się nim.
– Która śpi z którym? – ciągnęła temat Romilda, chichocząc. – JA zaklepuję Artemisa!
– To nie fair! – zirytowała się Charlotte McLaggen i trąciła swoją przyjaciółkę trochę za mocno, bo Romilda zachwiała się niebezpiecznie. – To ja śpię w takim razie z Felixem! Jest najnormalniejszy!
– Dla was został tylko gruby Al Atrash i ten walnięty zdrowo Thaddeus Clarke!
Sara automatycznie zaczęła się zastanawiać nad kolegami z klasy. Wolała Thaddeusa, bo był jakiś sympatyczniejszy od wiecznie nachmurzonego Al Atrasha, ale czy rzeczywiście byłoby bezpiecznie spać w łóżku z nieobliczalnym Clarke'iem? On był najdziwniejszym zjawiskiem, jaki w życiu Sara widziała i, jak to bywa z najdziwniejszymi zjawiskami, po prostu nic nie było pewne.
– Nie śpię z żadnym z nich! – oświadczyła Sara wyniośle. – A wam radzę się wziąć za naukę, a nie gadać takie głupoty! To szkoła, nie jakieś nie wiadomo co! Mamy dopiero po jedenaście lat!
Romilda i Charlotte roześmiały się w głos, zerkając na siebie z politowaniem.
– Ty chyba nie mówisz poważnie?! – zapytała Charlotte.
– Poważnie. Uważam, że jesteśmy za małe na takie rzeczy!
– Kto jest za mały, ten jest za mały, dziewczynko! – zerknęła na nią z góry większa i tęższa od Sary blondynka.
Chociaż Charlotte przygląda się jej złośliwie, Sarę coś zirytowało w jej wyniosłym wzroku i zaczerwieniła się ze złości. Może była rzeczywiście zbyt dziecinna i nieobeznana w jakichś rzeczach? Czy mama wychowywała ją za bardzo pod kloszem? Jedno było pewne: Sara nie znosiła tej wyniosłej dziewczyny, chwalącej się na każdym kroku swoim idealnym pochodzeniem.
– Hej, Sara! – obruszyła się McLaggen. – Co tak poważnie od razu?
– Wyraziłam tylko swoje zdanie: na chłopaków za wcześnie, zaraz mamy zaklęcia i Syriusz Black nie wejdzie do szkoły, a na pewno nie do naszego dormitorium. Po co mu takie Romilda i Charlotte?
Melisa parsknęła, gdy, zerkając przez ramię w trakcie mycia, spostrzegła miny Charlotte i Romildy.
– Myśmy tylko żartowały… A tak w ogóle to skąd wiesz, że morderca czegoś nie zrobi? Czyżby był twoim krewniakiem? – zażartowała Charlotte, po czym zwróciła się do Romildy – Widzisz, miałyśmy rację: to jej krewny, nazwiska się zgadzają, to musi być jedna rodzina!
W Sarze zagotował się gniew i wściekłość i prychnęła:
– Nie znam tego mordercy, to absurd!
– Jasne, jasne… Może się wstydzisz takiego krewniaka! Tata czy stryjek?
– Przestańcie, czemu się znęcacie nad najsłabszą? – wtrąciła Melisa.
Romilda i Charlotte roześmiały się, ich rozbawiony śmiech odbijał się od stropu i ścian, od umywalek i okien… Sara naprawdę nie wiedziała, dlaczego żarty dziewczyn z klasy były dla niej takie przykre. Imputowanie, zupełnie bezpodstawne, że ten morderca jest jej ojcem czy jakimś nieznanym stryjem, okazało się dla niej bardzo nieprzyjemne. Może dlatego, że nie miała ojca i dziadków i czasem czuła się, jakby wyleciała sroce spod ogona: zero wiadomości o przodkach, mieszkanie w Basildon i mama, zawsze tajemnicza i niechętnie opisująca to, co było…
– AAAACH!!! – wrzasnął duch uczennicy, gdyż sedes, w którym miała się właśnie utopić, poszedł nagle w drobny mak, podobnie do wszystkich kranów. Romilda, Melisa i Charlotte wrzasnęły i odskoczyły od umywalek, z których pryskały strumienie wody.
– Co się dzieje? Usłyszałem…
Ożywiony głos Artemisa Greengrassa, który wleciał do łazienki bezczelnie, przerwał dziki wrzask czterech, w tym jednej martwej, dziewczyn. Chłopiec zagwizdał.
– No no… Ale bajzel…
– AAAAAA!!! Mężczyzna!!! – zapiała Jęcząca Marta.
– Jaki mężczyzna, ledwo dzieciakiem bym się nazwał, ale…
– Wynocha!!! – wrzasnęła Romilda.
– NIGDY WIĘCEJ NIE NAZYWAJ MNIE KREWNĄ BLACKA!!! – krzyknęła Sara.
– Sara, spokojnie… – wtrąciła Melisa.
– NIE UCISZAJ MNIE, MELISA!
– Mężczyzna!!! W mojej toalecie!!! Spokoju po śmierci nawet nie zaznałam!!!…
– Co, Black, czyżbym ci nadepnęła na odcisk?
– … Cóż za okrutny los!!! Pewnie przyszedłeś się śmiać, świnio! Nawet po śmierci mnie podglądają!!! Świnie!!!
– Wyjdź stąd, Artemis!
– Romildziu, chciałem tylko popatrzeć!
– Sara!!! Co ty robisz, nie bij się z nią!!!
– ZOSTAW MNIE, FLAXENFIELD!!!
– Agresywna jesteś, dziewczynko! Czyżbyś miała to w genach?
– GRRR!!! ODSZCZEKAJ TO, BEZMÓZGU!!!
– ZJEŻDŻAJ STĄD, GREENGRASS!!!
– MĘĘĘĘĘŻCZYZNAAAAAA!!! BIAAAAADAAAA MIIIIII NA WIEEEEEKIIII!!! AAAAA!!!
– CO TU SIĘ DZIEJE, DO CHOLERY JASNEJ?!
Pięciu Gryfonów i jeden duch, pochlipujący malowniczo, zwrócili głowy w kierunku drzwi. Stała tam profesor McGonagall, z wściekłości rozszerzająca dziurki u nosa. Obserwowała ze złością dziwaczną scenkę: Sara, wyrywająca się Melisie i szarżująca na Charlotte, Romilda wymachująca pięścią w kierunku spłoszonego Artemisa i Jęcząca Marta, zawodząca za nimi, wszystko na tle kałuż i gejzerów, które malowniczo tryskały z rozwalonych kranów.
– Charlotte i Romilda śmiały się z Sary! – wyjaśniła natychmiast Melisa. – Obrażały ją, twierdząc, że Syriusz Black jest z jej rodziny!
McGonagall na chwilę, nie wiedzieć czemu, zaniemówiła, po czym, jakby odzyskując rezon, ofuknęła Artemisa:
– A ty, Greengrass, co ty tu wyrabiasz?!
– Ja nic, zostałem obrzucony wyzwiskami… i wodą z kibli! – miauknął żałośnie czarnowłosy.
– Szoruj stąd, chłopcze, to damska toaleta! A wy… Zawiodłam się na was, dziewczynki. Panna Vane i McLaggen otrzymują po minus dziesięć punktów dla Gryffindoru i szlaban jutro, u mnie po zajęciach… I ty, Black, też minus dziesięć punktów za zniszczenia.
Sara nie spytała, skąd McGonagall wie, że to ona roztrzaskała armaturę.
– Powinnyście się wspierać i stać za sobą murem, a nie siać niezgodę i oskarżać się bezpodstawnie o jakieś głupoty! Mam nadzieję, że ta lekcja was czegoś nauczy! A teraz idźcie na zaklęcia, żeby pan Filch mógł normalnie posprzątać po was bałagan!
I wyszła. Romilda i Charlotte, obrażone, opuściły przy akompaniamencie wyjącej Marty łazienkę, zerkając wrogo na Sarę. Charlotte uśmiechała się złośliwie i tryumfalnie. Sara, nie odzywając się do Melisy i ignorując jej pełen zatroskania wzrok, ruszyła się wreszcie z miejsca, przeżuwając w ustach smak złości. Dlaczego ją tak to zirytowało?
