He got his chance when an earlier merger of MoetHennessy and Louis Vuitton began breaking apart. The two controlling families disagreed on how to fend off raiders. The Moet family offered British brewer Guinness a 20% stake. To % fight back, the Vuittons brought in Arnault. What they didn't know was that Arnault had long had his eye on their company and had been buying shares since the October crash. Once an insider, Arnault switched sides. With Guinness he formed a holding company, which he controls, that owns 38% of Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Born to bourgeois comfort near Lille in northern France, Arnault joined the family construction company after graduating from the Ecole Polytechnique, France's prestigious engineering school. Weary of puny profits from putting up warehouses and factories, Arnault moved the company into the lucrative new niche of building timesharing vacation complexes on the Riviera. with his wife and two young children. He prospered developing condominiums in Palm Beach and got an intensive course in American management methods.

Technology is the enabler, said Christopher Bailey, chief creative officer at Burberry. "This gives them an opportunity to feel that energy and feel the attitude of what you're working on. I find it incredibly liberating." In the last few years, fashion has gradually opened itself up to ordinary shoppers. Bloggers have sidled into shows alongside fashion editors, the TV show "Project Runway" has made design seem doable, and Fashion's Night Out has brought designers into stores to meet shoppers. But never before have Fashion Week designers so aggressively appealed directly to consumers with their shows, in large part because technology makes it so easy but also because economic conditions make this round of runway shows so important. The luxury shoppers that Fashion Week designers go after all but disappeared during the recession, not only because rich consumers' investments plummeted but also because it was unseemly to buy expensive items in a sober time. Now, though, they appear to be buying again. Herms International said last month that its profit rose 55.2 percent in the first half compared with a year earlier.

We've got enough problems. "He wants to be treated as a veteran. A veteran knows if you've got a day game or a night game." Bell was just warming to his subject. She wore them baggy, ripped, peggedand in public. You can't be Victoria Beckham's shortskirted sidekick one day and Punky Brewster the next without raising a few sculpted eyebrows, and the sentiments ranged from concerned to horrified. And this launched the Katie Holmes Jeans Watch 2008 . Long story short: The cyberfashionistas criticized what they didn't understand, but by October Holmes' style was cutting edge. Just last week, Saks Inc. announced plans to become the first foreign luxury department store in China, featuring prestige products like those in Saks Fifth Avenue stores in the United States. fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, whose first China store opened here in 2002, now has 40 stores in 23 Chinese cities and plans more. Immediately after launching this year's spring line in New York, Hilfiger flew to Shanghai to showcase the new fashions. "Just in the past couple of years, during the fashion season, you see more shows than in New York!" says Tito Tan, who used to run an eventmanagement company in Shanghai. "But it's not just product launches; it's relaunches, or to let people know a store is open, or because a CEO is in town. Here, if Armani does a fashion show, Gucci has to do one. They'll spend $1 million and invite 1,000 people." Five years ago, buyers from mainland China represented just 1 percent of world sales of luxury handbags and other accessories. Now, the Chinese are the thirdlargest consumers of luxury goods, accounting for more than 12 percent of global sales, according to a study by Goldman Sachs.

''You fall in love for inexplicable reasons,'' he says. ''This is completely rational. Nothing makes money like deluxe brands.'' Arnault is betting the chateau on that notion. By taking control in 1988 of Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, he became the world's preeminent purveyor of luxury goods, including Moet Chandon and Dom Perignon Champagnes, Hennessy cognac, Louis Vuitton luggage, Christian Dior and Givenchy clothes and perfumes, and Christian Lacroix fashions. ''This,'' he says triumphantly, ''is one of the world's most beautiful companies.

It was a coup even for him, however, to get the likes of Gisele Bundchen, Carmen Kass, Frankie Rayder and Shalom Harlow, who all very rarely do shows, to walk in February. Start the wish list now of who he'll nab for his debut at Balenciaga next year. Miley Cyrus' cropped cut. When Cyrus cut off the long hair her fans had become used to, she took some heat. She has said (and Tweeted) repeatedly, though, that she was pleased with the new punkpixie look and was sticking with it. Short hair turned out to be a big trend, with Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Anne Hathaway all ending the year with much shorter locks than they started with. Julianne Moore at the Emmys. Moore's neonyellow Dior Haute Couture outfit (really a sweater and ball skirt) spawned a loveitorhateit debate among armchair style critics. What was largely left out of that conversation, however, was that it was Raf Simons' big celebrity debut for Dior, which he took creative control of after the John Galliano scandal. At least Simons can claim the better reviews when it came to his showdown of nextgen designers at historic French houses against Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent Paris.

The playing lacked the nuance I think the movement needs to make it's full emotional impact. But the playing was solid and precise enough to reveal the piece's compactness. The jaunty final movement, "Rags Gordon's Last Ride," came off with energy and a sense of fun. When Munger came onstage to acknowledge the audience's applause, he paused to slap hands with principal bass player John McKeever, who led the section in giving their big fiddles a snazzy spin at a key point. The program ended with Robert Russell Bennett's popular suite of tunes from Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" that drew a standing ovation. The soloists were all good throughout the evening, but Trevor Clayton's trombone in "It Ain't Necessarily So" really stood out. The Anchorage Junior Youth Symphony, directed by Donald Curry, opened the evening with a Telemann overture, Robert Smith's "The Second Storm" (the best sounding piece on their part of the program) and excerpts from RimskyKorsakov's "Capriccio Espagnol." The Discovery Theatre was mostly full, a much better turnout than the last AYS concert I attended. Most were family, as is usual; but they couldn't all have been relatives.

Maybe he should have paid more attention to them." Then it was back to Roberts to see if he had any rebuttal. "He can say whatever he says," the player said. "It doesn't hurt me." What was this business about not knowing the difference between a day game and a night game? "OK, when I first got here, I didn't know my way around this place," Roberts explained. "Me and Brian (Hunter) went out to eat, and he said, "We've got a night game tomorrow.' I said, "Night game, OK.' At 9:30 (the next morning) I got a call saying you've got to be here at 10:05. That's the first time I ever made that mistake in my life. If that's the worst thing I've ever done, then so be it. " When Roberts arrived at the park, Bell got in his face. And that pretty much ended the relationship between the two men. "He tried to yell me," Roberts said. "And I'm not a kid. I'm not going to let you yell at me. I'm not your son, don't yell at me. I don't yell at my kids. I want the respect of a 34yearold man. If it was personal from that point on, that's his problem."

Vuitton is planning big things for San Francisco, not to mention an array of themed sports gear, watches, clothing and, of course, luggage. "The America's Cup is the richest sporting event, in my opinion," he said. "And to do it in a city like San Francisco, with the spectators close to the boats, with fast catamarans, it will be quite a show." Though he now lives in Brittany, he's in Cascais, Portugal, this week for the inaugural America's Cup racing series (which began Saturday and continues through next Sunday). But he'll soon be back in the Bay Area, which is fast becoming like a second home. His sister owns the international fashion chain Agns B., which had a Union Square store a few years back, and visits regularly as he helps forge plans for Vuitton's involvement in the Cup. On his signature red linen pants: "There is a tradition here in Brittany, on the Atlantic, for sailors to wear red pants. It is colorful and more fun than a navy blue suit. It is perfect with a navy blazer. Mine are made by my friend in Italy. I have been wearing red pants for many years."

I've been seeing spots for the past few days. Ever since I decided to write about them they have appeared before my eyes big black ones on a breezy white chiffon shirt worn by one of our interns; little polka dots embedded in a velvet pencil skirt on a femme fataleish train passenger; jaunty white ones on a red scarf tied around the collar of a dapper old man at the bus stop. Spots, it seems, are integral to all of our wardrobes, always natty but, depending on size and colour, as loud or as discreet as we want them to be. A spot can be fun in a jolly, eccentric way, as Moschino, Paul Smith and Boden have all known for some time. Then there is the bold, cultish, pleasingly poncey spot, the Comme des Garons spot, much loved by graphic designers and architects, the understated status symbol of the thinking fashion follower. (To this day I remain annoyed that I never managed to get hold of one of those 2008 Comme des Garons for H spotted cardigans. To this day.) But this month spots have moved into the world of luxury.

and foster futures Professor Don Barry, president of the University of Limerick ( UL), highlighted the growth in demand for its graduates as the university started four days of conferring ceremonies in which 2,419 students will graduate, including 56 PhD graduates. He said: "It is essential that we continue to exceed international benchmarks in the delivery of high quality, relevant research that will support Irish innovators and continue to attract foreign direct investment." Professor Barry said that traditionally UL's graduate employment figures trend well above the national average. "Despite the challenging environment, UL's graduate employment rate has continued to rise and our 2011 figure for primary degree holders is now 16pc higher than the HEA's most recently available national average figure which is 46pc for 2010. "Year on year our graduate employment figures are increasing as a reflection of our continually evolving programmes that offer our talented students the kind of educational and research experiences that will best prepare them for their careers," he said.

Then I came up with this idea of a book to celebrate the success of the Louis Vuitton trophies, nicknamed 'The Friendly Games.' My best memory is a dinner party at Lucy and 's house. A breathtaking view! it will take significant time for companies to estimate potential losses from the Japanese earthquake, and we expect that exposure will vary widely among reinsurers," financial analysts for Keefe, Bruyette Woods Inc. said in a note Wednesday. Larry Greenberg, an analyst with Langen McAlenney in Hartford, said his firm is inclined to believe that ultimate insured losses will be at the high end of AIR's estimates. "We believe that similar to postKatrina, the rating agencies could have a major impact on the marketplace as they reevaluate capital requirements," Greenberg said in his analyst's note Tuesday. MetLife Inc. bought American Life Insurance Company (ALICO) last year from American International Group Inc. The foreign lifeinsurance company relies on customers in Japan for a large part of its revenue, though it's not clear to what degree the disasters will disrupt that business or for how long. The Hartford Financial Services Group doesn't expect to incur claims from the earthquake and tsunami because the company doesn't cover property and casualty in Japan.
